This small painting became my 2018 Christmas card. After stumbling on to a pad of dotted paper on a clearance table, I thought about Celtic knots. Why? Early on in my calligraphy journey I took a wonderful workshop from Mark Van Stone, who was a specialist in the Celtic hand. The class also made simple Celtic knots with dots. Mark studied Medieval Celtic manuscripts at the British Museum and discovered the dot method used by the monks. Then he wrote a small pamphlet on those methods which is a great reference. So, I decided it would be fun, and it was, to make the word “puzzle” using this method twice. I got winks and giggles from the monks as I wandered through 7th to 11th Century manuscripts, especially when filling in empty spaces with mythical animals. “Girls just gotta have fun”. Enjoy.
