Artist's Description

I have been trying to do words that do their meaning. I did quotations mostly, but wanted to center on my own quotation or just the words. Then a friend lent me a book on Concrete Poetry. However everything in it was done in type and I didn't understand why they called it concrete. I had always hopped that people who saw my work and didn't read English would be able to understand it, that is if the words really did do their meaning. Then one day while working in the Jerome Gallery a teacher told me that she had taught her grade school children concrete poetry, like in some of my work. I asked her why they named it that. And she said, "It doesn't need to be translated. It doesn't change...solid." YEA! It is nice to know what you are doing. However, I like to call it Image Poetry. I really doesn't matter as long as people look at it. Thanks.

Sid Freeman

Lettering Art by Sid Freeman After 20 years as a professional calligrapher, I found myself competing with the computer. This was not fun and slowly I worked back to my roots as a painter only this time using those magical sound symbols which make up our speech. Receiving her MFA from the University of Wyoming and then working in advertising Sid Freeman became enamored with calligraphy. With the help of the Wyoming Arts Council grant money she began to study with many incredible professionals as well as taking workshops from the Colorado Calligraphers Guild. In 1987 she became self employed and enjoyed doing great jobs like the Wyoming Governors Awards and Federal Marshals Proclamations. In 1993 she and her husband,...
