This painting started as a theme project, something I am usually not excited about. A member of my critique group suggest that the group paint a picture out-of-the-window. I knew that it would be a challenge to use lettering and still-life together. But, earlier I have had some success with lettering and landscape. The important challenge would be trying to maintain the integrity of both the letter forms and the still-image at the same time. When words here are “light & dark”. So, I decided to give it a try. The organic nature of landscape is much more forgiving than still-life and architecture. In fact I really wanted the them to flatter each other and not dominate one another. I wanted them to create a relationship i.e. a narrative. This painting was a struggle and it shows, but once I started I had to see it through. Some in the group weren’t so sure. As it turned out, only myself and the woman who suggested the project did it. And I understand why. I almost threw...

Lettering Art by Sid Freeman �After 20 years as a professional calligrapher, I found myself competing with the computer. This was not fun and slowly I worked back to my roots as a painter only this time using those magical sound symbols which make up our speech.� Receiving her MFA from the University of Wyoming and then working in advertising Sid Freeman became enamored with calligraphy. With the help of the Wyoming Arts Council grant money she began to study with many incredible professionals as well as taking workshops from the Colorado Calligraphers� Guild.
