This painting started as a theme project, something I am usually not excited about. A member of my critique group suggest that the group paint a picture out-of-the-window. I knew that it would be a challenge to use lettering and still-life together. But, earlier I have had some success with lettering and landscape. The important challenge would be trying to maintain the integrity of both the letter forms and the still-image at the same time. When words here are “light & dark”. So, I decided to give it a try. The organic nature of landscape is much more forgiving than still-life and architecture. In fact I really wanted the them to flatter each other and not dominate one another. I wanted them to create a relationship i.e. a narrative. This painting was a struggle and it shows, but once I started I had to see it through. Some in the group weren’t so sure. As it turned out, only myself and the woman who suggested the project did it. And I understand why. I almost threw it away twice, but I had already spent too much time on it and just couldn’t let it go. Well, it is up to you whether I succeeded or not. What it really did was teach me…so from that perspective it was a success. There is always something important for you to learn when it feels uncomfortable.
