Description
This painting was an effort for me to simplify and create visual impact. That succeeded, however with a loss of word understanding. For me art should be a balance of three elements, all at their best. Firstly, the artist which brings motivation and skill. You would think that would also be the meaning, but with luck and watchfulness, the painting begins to tell the artist what the meaning is, if the skill is at its best. Secondly, the media. Yes, if the artist doesn’t respect the media, then the media can not be its best. Thirdly, the subject matter. Same problem with respect of its unique rhythm. I have never really considered myself to be an “artist”. Because that would mean I make “art”. I am a painter, working at “art”. Somewhat like being a lawyer, working at “law”. But, I will never know if I ever make “art”. Artist is a label society demands or they think you paint houses. Something which takes more skill than I can muster. Only time and culture makes that decision as to what is “art”. And even that can be wrong. So what is understanding? Understanding is a very nebulous term since everyone comes to a painting with their own prejudices and life history which the artist has no control over. The more variety sometimes the better; that means the more universal the piece will become. But, there is a problem with that. Is it simply milk toast? That is where my problem seems to be - I didn’t know myself what this “word understanding” in ‘To & Fro” was. My friends saw the painting as a rocket ship or couldn’t read it at all. One women thought it was political. The painting finally told me that I didn’t respect the subject matter and the painting was about shape and color (media) and not much more. P.S. I do like the color. Live and learn. By the way, the words I used were: order & chaos. Your feed back is welcomed. Thanks.
