Description
The quotation that inspired this painting is "When you boil rice, know that the water is your own life", which is a Zen Saying that I have now done twice. The first one didn't satisfy me. Zen sayings do not have a right or wrong interpretation and how you understand them really is more about you and where your head is at the moment (I think?). This is what this painting has repeated to me - I'm pretty sure I already knew it, but need to remember. The first time I did this quote I thought it was about expectations. Sort of a "watch pot won't boil" - if you are not in harmony with natural rhythms, you would be frustrated with the rice not cooking as you expected. Throw away expectations. I still like that interpretation, but the second time I painted it, it showed to be a universe unto itself and the quote was only one small part and my interpretions as well. This painting has a life separate from me and prehaps I will never know the meanings of the words which is okay, as long as I grow. I am so happy making paintings - everyone is a suprise. What do you think ? Also I used real rice footprints for the visual texture.

Hi Deli - Thank you for your comments. A woman at the Xmas JAC show told me that they have done experiements and have found that water has "memory". Interesting idea. I've gotten 4 out of five applications back. I keep my fingers crossed; but I'm wondering if a blog might be a better use of time. Any news on the job front? My e-mail is freeman@northlink.com if it's easier for you - cheaper? Take care, Sid
