Description
After taking a workshop from Argentinian Calligrapher Marina Soria, I found myself energized to try my luck at designing text. Marina’s beautiful samples of Indigenous Peoples textiles of South America as well as her own inspired work got me excited. As you can see by this piece, I dove into colors that I rarely use together and had fun. It’s good to give yourself a kick in the pants.
Again I used three 9 X 12 inch stretcher (as in ‘Canyon’) and again changing their depths. Putting them this time in a row, so I could actually mat prints if need be. Deciding to show a side view of the depth a well. (See picture), from left to right the are 1 3/4”, 1 1/8” and 1/2”. I am sure that much more experienced text designers have done similar designs. Using a circle, oval and a square have probably the based many designs, but not for me. And my letter spacing needs help if I ever use them again. Here I only repeated the word “nuance”.
Marina Soria showed us her “zipper” book as well. Yes, I tried that too…and used a small print to do that. Well, a three page accordion book does not fold well when all the pages are the same size, but I will keep trying. It did manage to stand up.
I call this painting ‘Spoken’ because even when we speak the same language, subtle nuances can be easily missed. Listen well. Thanks for reading this., Sid
