Description
Anchored Innocence is my latest attempt at making a visual narrative. Experimenting with "words doing their meanings", I have been working with nouns and their relationship to each other. In the narrative series, I have used pronouns; he, she & we with hopes that the relationships between the words would write the story. In the painting "Anchored Innocence", I used the most famous romance I could find (Romeo and Juliet). Using the names "Romeo & Juliet" in Gothic lettering for the background (purple & yellow), I hoped to represent the two main characters in their cultural environment. Gothic being the most dominate lettering style of the Renaissance. Also It's picket fence quality is forms a barrier. In the intensely of their love so is the color of the lettering as they spiral around each other. Here I used Roman Caps lettering, because it is our most enduring lettering designed; we use it everywhere today. True love is enduring. In the process of painting this piece, I asked myself, "Why didn't they just leave?". They couldn't because they were anchored to family tradition and in their innocent desperation lead to a bad decision. The colors fad and become fragmented as they die; asking each other "Wherefore art thou?".
