Description
My friend Jeanne Poland and fellow calligrapher said to me: "Every thought that I have is either illusion or illumination". I thought that was very profound and asked her if I could used it for a painting. Well, she said yes and here it is. I hope she likes it. I hope you like it. Due to the sliding in and out of illumination and illusion I chose a somewhat modern gothic, hee, hee...if there is really such a thing, so the letters would be seen in each others spaces. I also liked the changing quality of colors as they were surround by different backgrounds. J. Albers did a wonderful study of the simultaneous contrast of colors. Using grey as a low identity color - going toward violet when surrounded by yellow and yellowish when surrounded by purple. I am trying here to use this color quality again as a metaphor for the illusive nature of illusion and illumination.
